One cannot imagine Bentheim Spa’s urban features without the massive Castle. As an imposing historical monument and a landmark that people can recognize from far away it has characterized the town for centuries. The history of the fortress, which was originally built for defence purposes and was for the first time mentioned in 1050 in the Essen/Werden register, has gone through many ups and downs. Today the Castle (formerly fortress), still in good repair, is Bentheim’s „number one tourist attraction“. Year by year, over 100.000 visitors come to see Bentheim Castle, which manifests in its different buildings‘ structure the Romanesque, the Gothic and the Renaissance styles. From the top of the 30-metre-tall keep, the so-called „Pulverturm“ (Pulver = gunpowder), you have got a wonderful view of the neighbouring countries of Westphalia and the Netherlands if the weather is fine.
