Comino is the third island of the republic of Malta, 2,5qm big, would you believe it. It is said that in the middle age, prisoners cultivated caraway there - Maltese « kemmuna », so the name of the island is the Italian version of it. There is no village and only one hotel – a sport hotel with a huge offer of different sport facilities. Apart from this, the island consists of thyme-covered scree and is very barren...
...but nevertheless a lot of tourists find their way to Comino for a day trip – for one reason: the Blue Lagoon. When you are swimming there, you understand why all swimming pools are painted turquoise! The shallow, quiet inlet between Comino and the rock Cominotto is one of the most beautiful places for bathing of Malta.
But the Blue lagoon is not the only dream place at Comino – also very idyllic is the Crystal Lagoon. Probably you can imaging from where it has its name: the water is unbelievable clear. In contrast to the Blue Lagoon, where you have a small sandy beach and the open country falls relatively smooth to the sea, the Crystal Lagoon is surrounded by cliffs. Above them, you see the old massive fortified tower, builded in 1618 for garrison of 130 men and 18 cannons. Another nice bathing place is the bay of St. Marija with a sandy beach and an old chapel.
