I live just outside & to the West of Dublin (moved here about 18 months ago). Dublin itself is a great example of a cosmolitan city. In fact, especially in the summer, you're just as likely to hear a European accent in the city as much as a local one. Not only will you be spoilled for choice for a pub but there's a wide choice of good restaurants, hotels, shopping & so forth.
If you're interested in history then you'll be as happy as a kid in a sweet shop here. But don't just stick to the city....the countryside is beautiful.
I visited Cork a little while ago...again a wonderful example of history & tourist interests (Blarney stone etc).
also if you like fishing & horses this is the country to come to.
