Old Mostar Getting Some New Changes

by Shafali - last update: Aug 2, 2004

I was in love as soon as I came to this town....actually as soon as I crossed the border. There's something so tragically beautiful about it...The recent past of war and destruction is apparent, and it makes me want to love this place even more.
The Old Bridge is almost complete, and it's going to be a victorious celebration....very symbolic and emotional, I'm sure....

Along the River Banks

The city is still divided. There are separate police, hospitals, institutions of that sort for the Bosnian and Croatian populations. One local did mention the system is slowly becoming one and things are on the mend, but emotions are still running high....I can't blame them. It was a very traumatic time. However the rebuilding of the bridge offers some solace and hope for the future.

View Across the River near the Old Bridge

Among the antique buildings cafes and bars are popping up on both sides of the river.

Pros:"Slowly but surely recovering from the war"
Cons:"Still divided even though there is slow progress"
