McDonalds Rent-A-Car - New Zealand

McDonalds Rent-A-Car

McDonalds Rental Cars

We prefer to use this company, having done so for many years. It is a family run business which began from a small fleet to the size it is today, situated in both islands.
Although not one of the big Names in rental cars, we have no problem recommending McDonalds.
Their cars are never more than 2 yrs old, always in very good condition, and the price rates are always very good.
Not situated at the International Airport, they will make arrangements to meet you, so that is not a problem.
Within NZ the toll free number is: 0800 164 165
April 2008 - I used this company again and still highly recommend them. Such personal service and totally willing to please.

Nakedbus.com Cheapest travel around NZ.

You can travel between many towns on nakedbus for just $NZD1 plus 70c booking fee if you book far enough in advance. Closer to the day of travel, the cost goes up, but it still remains very competitive and reasonable.
Launched in Sept 2006, they continue to add destinations to their routes and the company is growing rapidly. This is a nofrills service, and all bookings done online. No paper tickets, just booking numbers.
I have recommended this to many friends who have use the service happily.

Nakedbus.com operates in both North and South Islands.

Early morning departure from Hamilton. - New Zealand

Early morning departure from Hamilton.

Freedom Air to/from Australia

This budget airline offers great rates and close proximity to New Zealanders who live south of Auckland, in the Waikato region. They also fly to other smaller towns, such as New Plymouth, Wellington and Dunedin.
Of course the destination for these flights, is Australia. Freedom flies to Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sydney.
Peanuts and Cola flights, where you are welcome to take your own food. These flights are relatively short, around 4 hrs long, depending on where you leave from, so not having a meal is really no big deal.

Leaving your vehicle in Wellington. - New Zealand
Leaving your vehicle in Wellington.

WELLINGTON INTERISLANDER TERMINAL CARPARK.

This may not suit everyone, but if you drive south to Wellington and catch the Ferry to the South Island, you can leave your car right there at the Ferry Port. We did this while we walked the Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlborough Sounds. It is very expensive to take a vehicle over to the other island, on the ferry. So it seemed logical to just leave the car here. It's right beside the InterIslander Ferry Terminal, and costs $10NZD per day. You can just walk over to the Ferry from here. As you can see in the photo, it's situated under the road overpass, so the cars are sheltered from the sun. Just means the car doesn't cook up like an oven while you are away. It's close and convenient, too, for when you return.
We just drove up to the booth, without a booking and there was plenty of room available. The carpark is fenced and secure, so very good place to leave the car.

Spaceship Campervan - New Zealand

Spaceship Campervan

Cheaper than Campervan, better than Car.

These micro campers, are smaller than most campervans, yet good value. Better than hiring a car as they provide "snail" accommodation, a place to sleep in the vehicle. With foldaway barbeque and underseat refrigerator, they provide for most needs if you don't require luxurious accommodation. Ideal for a couple and so versatile with moving around New Zealand especially.

Very good service nationwide.

Don't forget to consider travelling on the local bus company, that covers the whole country. Intercity is a scheduled regular bus company, not a tour company. Fine coaches and great routes, the most of any.
If at all possible, book in advance and you are more likely to get a cut price ticket. These special prices are very reasonable.
All in all, a great way to get around the country.
