I have not been to Antarctica therefore I use other people's photographs. Please don't rate me for this page because it is not my original work. I am more interested in building a page that is truly about Antarctica, for those of us interested in the place. We can't all get the opportunity to go there, so I want people to enjoy a "cyber visit". Happy viewing, Pam.
It is said that Aristotle first named a large land in the south, and he named it ANTARKTIKOS.
CAMPBELL ISLAND is a part of New Zealand, however it is classified as "sub-Antarctic" so I'd like to mention it here. Please visit my Campbell Island page to view this wonderful place. I recommend you also visit the Antarctica page of my good friends VT members "lihue" and "ekahau" and frankcanfly - all have been there and have wonderful photographs. |
| | Eco-Tourism Friends visiting the Great White Continent, well clothed as you can see, and prepared for the intense cold. The tourists are briefed well and taught not to leave anything behind, nor take anything except photographs.
Heritage Expeditions operate from New Zealand if you want to get down there. |
Antarctica is the place of "...iest" records in the world! Here are a few statistics I have read:
Here was recorded the claimed Lowest temperature on earth, in July 1983 : -89.6deg C [-129.3deg F] Driest place on earth, in the Eastern valleys: No rain for 2million years!!!
The Interior annual accumulation of snow = 50mm rain [2inches]. (This is a little more than the Sahara)
The Coastal region gets annually 900mm of rain [ 35 inches].
Average Inland Winter temps: -40deg C to -70deg C. Average Inland Summer temps: -15deg C to 35deg C.
Average Coastal Winter temps: -15degC to 35deg C. Average Coastal Summer temps: 0deg C [32deg F].
THE WINDIEST PLACE ON EARTH! Or so they claim..... Occassionally it has been recorded at Cape Dennison, to have had up to 320km/hr winds, that is 200mph!!

A+++ | Trekki Sat Aug 26, 2006 14:57 UTC Oh Pam, your page is definitely much more interesting and informative than some others which have been there only for 1 day and claim to be experts. I also would like to go, but... maybe I visit the Visitor Center in CHCH instead :-) | budapest8 Mon Apr 3, 2006 04:40 UTC Your Antartica pages are what makes VT an interesting place to visit. The Russian snow vechile looks like a lot of fun. Brrrrrr I can understand why nobody lives there permanently. Take care.Tim |
