Hinuera Valley.

This is is a low wide valley, where the mighty Waikato River used to flow before it's course was diverted by a volcanic eruption.

Hobbiton.

What is left of the Hobbiton set.

The set where Lord of the Rings, Hobbiton, was filmed is here at Hinuera. It is now possible, after many months of negotiating, to visit this site. You cannot just drive there and visit yourself, you MUST join an official tour. This may be booked and you catch the bus, at the Matamata Information Office, Broadway, Matamata. More details below in Things To Do.

Fantastic page! Thank you so much! I heard they are now rebuilding the set for The Hobbit and this time make it permanent so that it will stay afterwards. I will go there and see it one day :-)) I hope it all is not too much trouble for the locals!

Hi Pam, I thought they had removed the set completely - really interesting that at least the hobbit caves & the party tree do still exist. Best regards - Michael
