Hobsonville Base, a future in limbo.

by kiwi - last update: Apr 1, 2003

Hobsonville has lived most of it's life as an Airbase of the Royal New Zealand Airforce, and a small village nearby of military and civilian personel. Affectionately known as "Hobby" it is truly a special place.
It's military future is due to end, and what will become of this lovely picturesque corner of Auckland, is yet to be determined. Going back was a trip back to my childhood, and it felt very nice. However the unkempt atmosphere was very sad. The chapel hasn't closed yet and it was a very pleasant service I attended.
Airforce chapel inside.
Inside the chapel I was happy to see the airforce influence, really brought back memories. There was a very nice lady chaplain, a military lady herself with a very interesting side of life to tell us, including time spent in East Timor during the conflict there.
Upper Waitemata Harbour.

Sunderland flying boats.

40 or 50 years ago Sunderland Flying boats used to launch from this ramp. Here the tide is almost out, baring the mangrove mudflats, but it still has a certain beauty about it.

Pros:"Ideally situated so close to the city."
Cons:"It's future could see the airfield subdivided and developed."
In A Nutshell:"Palms and green grass expanses, so near the city."

I searched & read some web pages about RNZAF "Hobby". Your life there must be very memorable. Thanks for sharing how it is today.

They should make this place into a resort, such nice green spot with water and a beautiful sky.
