The Bloemenmarkt: this opens from 8.00 till 5.30 and is a series of permanently moored barges catering for all demands, bouquets, dried flowers, bonsai, bulbs, accessories and what we enjoyed most - fresh-cut flowers. Timing can be a little flexible depending on season!

Once home of the Provos who used to dance madly round the statue to show their rebellion but it is now thought by some to be the cultural heart of the city. Various street markets turn up, including books (Fridays) and art (Sundays).

From Spui one can enter the Beguinage through a narrow vaulted passage to a quiet garden surrounded by 17th & 18th C houses now occupied by old ladies or women students of slender means. In the centre is a mediaeval church popular for weddings and at number 34 is the city's oldest house, built of wood, in 1477.

A flamboyant Gothic building this now houses exhibitions and concerts. However its stained glass, bronze chandeliers, magnificently carved pulpit and choir stalls are worth seeing for themselves!

The building is a pretentious neo-Gothic building of brick and white stone from the turn of the last century. Originally it was the central post office but it is now an elegant shopping centre where the central stair well, surrounded by arcaded balconies, is worth seeing.

Built in 1620, using the remains of an old city gate as its base, this tall wooden bell tower chimes a carillon every quarter of an hour. The tiny shop at ground level sells Delft ware.

More grey than blue this was built for the Universal Exhibition of 1883. It crosses the Amstel, which gives the city its name.

The Anne Frank House has long queues. It is where the teenage Frank lived hidden with seven others of her family before being deported to Belsen where she died. Money raised from the sales of her 'diary' fund the Anne Frank Foundation which combates racism - so buy one!

Housed in a 17th C house cats of all descriptions abound in posters, books, sculptures, paintings, and reality - usually curled up in chairs in that case! Not smelly, just fun by someone who loves felines.
