Where ancient and modern co-exist I first saw Athens forty years ago and have been spellbound by it ever since, although the eternal building programme and the urban sprawl is enough to send anyone screaming out of the city. Somehow it grips one's heart. Current cleaning, modernisation and building is taking place ready for the 2004 Olympics and if all is complete there will be much attractive improvement, for example the pedestrianised walkway that links all the major sites of Ancient Athens. |
