For Cookham I used The Chauntry House at Bray. It has 16 rooms - and a very fine restaurant. Mark you, it is the same village as The Waterside, the Roux Michelin-rated restaurant and a place called The Fat Duck which is no slouch!
Unique Qualities: Quiet, civilised, and good-sized rooms, with plenty of good places to eat around it if you don't like the in-house high quality.

In London centre try the Horse Guards Hotel. It is very pleasant and comfortable. Get a room high up and enjoy the view over the roof tops of Whitehall! It is connected to the National Liberal Club - admire the staircase!
Unique Qualities: Comfortable, luxurious, with a pleasingly refined air.

A grand hotel that was originally built in Victorian times. It was totally re-vamped about six years and has 267 rooms that kept the best of the old and added the convenience we want from the new. Beautiful just to look at from the point of view of both Victorian and modern architecture, it has four good restaurants as well! Even the flower arrangements are works of art.
Unique Qualities: Expensive, but it was the only hotel in the Square Mile unitl very recently and has a great past and a great location. Really nice people there. I'm going to post some more photos of the place in What to See!

A lovely hotel, vast rooms and every amenity. It is big and has long corridors but that is because of the history of the building. It also has a restaurant which overlooks the Houses of Parliament and is a fine place to dine and to breakfast. I was so impressed by an overnight business trip here I took my wife back the next day for lunch. This is city centre at its best as it is central but you hear no noise nor see passing traffic. Staff are very helpful and used to seeing bemused guests wandering the wrong way in corridors!
Unique Qualities: The old County Hall - the building of the council of London before being abolished by Mrs Thatcher (and leading to the resurrection of the London Assembly in a new glass building which has a nickname amongst Londoners much to do with the spherical shape and the man who is our mayor). This is a special place. worth going to just for a drink in the bar overlooking the terrace and the Thames!
