Chez Gerard: Good food, easy atmosphere, just pleasant
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Chez Gerard

The Covent Garden branch has a good view over the Piazza, is handy for the Opera House, and is a comfortable place to eat. There is a great atmosphere here. The one at Tower Hill also very pleasant but more business people oriented.

Favorite Dish: Before I stopped eating meat: steak tartare. Now I enjoy the fish! The Coupe Colonel is a serious dessert.

Handy for the museums of London, yet inexpensive and right on top of the tube station.

    Favorite Dish: Italian!

This chain do a reasonable pizza and are located in just the right places where you need a break half way through site-seeing or just before the cinema/ theatre with little time. The service is always good and there is a pleasant atmosphere in them. Very professionally run.

Favorite Dish: The Caprina with extra jalopenos and anchovies (it's an acquired taste!) Maureen loves the Veneziana.

Directions: Try the one at the Barbican, there is a good one near the British Museum in Coptic Street, one in Bow Street, a couple near the Globe. A lovely one in the Kings Road. Don't like the one near the National Theatre - too large, too many children.

A standard Italian restaurant this is handy for the Opera House (Covent Garden) - or Bow Street nick if you have other priorities! - it is reasonable and a little less hectic than the general tourist run.

    Favorite Dish: Nothing special

Beottys: The eccentric old queen of Greeks

This is a wonderful place - olde world - though since they re-did the place a few years ago it has lost some of its eccentric charm. Greek food at London prices it seems to have few customers but always looks prosperous. Those who do come, like us, keep going back, drawn by something magical in its air.

Favorite Dish: Any Greek dish washed down with ouzo and retsina is good for me! It reminds me of what life is really about.

    Bertorellis: Italian with some style
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Bertorellis

This is an Italian restaurant very popular with the chattering classes at one time - and still handy for the Opera House it is sometimes still a little overrun. The place changes as to how crowded it is and with which member of staff serves you - but it is generally pleasant and serves good food. It is difficult to compare restaurants when you don't know if people count hamburger places as restaurants!

    Favorite Dish: Fish and pasta

Cafe des Amis du Vin: Nice French in quiet sidestreet
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Cafe des Amis du Vin

Found this place some years ago when it was far more a French bistro than it now is. Now it is quieter and the tables further apart and it is more expensive with less choice of food, but it is still nice. In Covent garden it is tucked away in a tiny side street so no outlook. Concentrate on your food and your partner (not necessarily in that order!, though we've all known those large conventions when the other has seemed a better bet - you get more conversation out of your food and the fellow guests look more appetising. . . )

Favorite Dish: Tarte au citron - with its real lemon tartness.

There ia a legend sbout this fountain. If you go to the fountain and at exactly the stroke of midnight then whisper the name of the one you love. Then your love will be eternal.
