I visited Mudgee for a few days for my friend's wedding. It's a great small town in the middle of an up-and-coming Aussie winery region. It's less popular with tourists than the Hunter Valley, but the wines are just as good! The shirazes are particularly well regarded. Many of the 20+ regional wineries offer accom, restaurants, and picnic areas.
In addition to the wineries, there's plenty of historical stuff around, and if you're a literary buff, make sure to visit some of the Henry Lawson sites. Get Henry Lawson info at the visitors center.
It's about 3 hours from Sydney. The drive is wonderful. If you can plan on taking all day and stoping in towns along the way, you won't regret it. |

sue_stone Thu Aug 18, 2005 10:21 UTC I am long over-due for some wine tasting in Mudgee! | aussiedoug Thu Jul 14, 2005 12:00 UTC Yes, not a bad little wine region at all. Have a squiz at my Capertee page 4 from where we visited Mudgee wineries. I've just started discovering the Hunter & it's better than I've given it credit 4 in the past. Cheers (said he tongue in cheek lol!) |
