This is a beautiful restaurant with the perfect ambiance - lively without being too informal. It is also easily accessible from either the Quay or Darling Harbor - so it makes a good stopping point if you are doing both of those in one day.
Lunch is served from 12-3:30 Monday - Saturday. Dinner is served from 5:30-9:30 Mon-Thurs; open until 10 Fri and Sat.
Favorite Dish: I would recommend the Stuffed Capsicums (Green Peppers for the Americans reading this!) or the Beef Stifado. The seasonings are perfect, and the portions are generous.

the Oyster Bar
This is a small, outdoor restaurant between Circular Quay and the Opera House. You can't beat the locale. It's a perfect place for a rest, throw back a beer, and people watch as well as enjoy one of the best views ever!
They open at 10 am and stay open late (ie, when the last person leaves.)
Favorite Dish: Of course, you can't go without trying the oysters (if you can choose from their huge selection!) or other types of seafood.
They are known as well for their oyster shots -- 1 oyster served with alcohol. The Original Oyster Shooter has vodka and spicy tomato juice. My favorite is the Tokyo Shooter - citrus vodka, wasabi, soy, and ginger.
Also, don't forget to save room for one of their great desserts (particularly the hazlenut praline and frangelico crepes!! --mmmm) or
While they are best known for their seafood, they also serve breakfast and have a full breakfast menu.

There's a little take-away place in The Rocks about a block off the main street. It is in a pedestrian area with a few small shops.
They have the best gyros and souvlaki in town. Service is very quick, even though I had never been there when there wasn't a line of people.
They have a few tables set up, but they are often full if you go at popular meal times. However, there are lots of benches around. It's worth eating there on the cobbled street - great people watching area, and if you look down the street in one direction, you can see one of the pilons of the Harbour Bridge.
Favorite Dish: The Gyros! They are made fresh and piled full of vegies. The sauce is GREAT.
Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: Pedestrian mall, one block in and running parallel to the main street in The Rocks,

One of my favorite memories of visiting my friends a few years ago is going to the Market with them. We went for lunch, and it was PACKED. We wandered through this huge building filled with lots of seafood venders. The seafood was brought right in fresh that day. We bought food from venders that prepared the food for us so we could eat it on the wharf. However, there were plenty of places that sold the stuff raw so you could take it home and prep it yourself.
Like I said, the place was packed. We ended up sitting on the ground on the wharf having a picnic because the tables were all full. My friends told me that this was normal - there's hardly a day that it isn't crammed with people, which tells you how good the place is.
Favorite Dish: The prawns were excellent.
In addition to fresh seafood, there are venders who sell wine (they will uncork it for you), fresh bread, and fruits and vegies so you can really have a complete meal.
You can also get all the extras - lemons to squeeze over fish, dipping sauces, etc.
