A rural town that spans the Connecticut river in lower Connecticut. Haddam is comprised of 4 major areas; Higganum, Haddam, Tylerville and Haddam Neck. Haddam Neck is on the east side of the river and is only accessabile by passing though other towns. Higganum, Haddam and Tylerville are on the west side of the river.
State Highway 9 bisects the town along a north/south axis. Routes 81 and 154 also service the town. Rt 81 begins at the intersection with Rt 154 in the center of Higganum and terminates on Rt 1 in Clinton. Rt 154 passes through the town following the contour of the Connecticut river, which is often visible from it.
Haddam is the home to the majority of the Cockaponset State Forest, which is the 2nd largest in the state. Recreational possiblities abound; hiking, biking, cross country skiing, boating, canoeing/kayaking, running, horse back riding and hunting to name just a few.
Haddam Meadows State Park is located in Haddam. Easily accesable from Rt154 and Rt9, this park is along the west bank of the Connecticut river. A full access boat ramp is maintained at the south end of the park by the state DEP. Directly across from the northern end of the park is Haddam Island State Park. The island is an undeveloped park which can only be reached by boat.
Haddam is also home the Connecticut Yankee Atomic engery plant. The plant is located in Haddam Neck area of town. The plant was closed 6 years ago and is in the midst of decomissioning. For those interested in small town/large corporation politics, I advise you to due a web search and enjoy the suits and countersuits!
Higganum in the north end and Tylerville in the south end are primary commercial areas in the town. The town supports a number of restaurants, convience stores, pizza places, package stores and beauty salons.
River cruises are run out of the Haddam landing. The landing is across the river from the historic Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam. Other area points of interest: Gilette Castle State Park, National Theater for the Deaf, Ivoryton Play House, The Essex Steam Train, Weslyan University.
