  • This was the scene outside our hotel in Peshawar. It's a street of bustling people, honking cars and trucks, brightly painted buses, and carts drawn by donkeys.Shops line the street, and men stand about chatting, very few women in sight. Perhaps you would like to visit the Peshawar travelogue.

  • Tip Rating:
  • We had to get permission to go to the Khyber Pass, and had to have two armed guards on our small bus with us. We met some of their 'mates' also, and they allowed my husband ,Michael,to have a photo with one of their rifles!!Michael was in the Pakistani gear,he likes to get the feel of a culture!!

Khyber Pass: On the way to the Khyber Pass....
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the way to the Khyber Pass. Typical scene, old forts, and walled houses, with lookouts. Several families live in these, and they come complete with gardens, where they grow veges or whatever they can in this dry place.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Afghanistan from the Khyber Pass, would be off limits these days, I should think!!
What a marvellous engineering feat this was.Tunnels for trains, the winding road, and always a Fort on top. My husband's g/father was here in the 1890's.

Things To Do: We are on our way to Mingora...
  • Tip Rating:
  • We are on our way to Mingora from Peshawar. This is our first taste of this long and winding road, and it was a bit of a shock, weren't there any road rules??????
The scenery is so beautiful, and the road an experience to drive. But I don't think the trucks know not to pass on corners, and slow carts and overloaded taxis clog the road at times. Such an unusual start to our holiday. What lies ahead??

  • Tip Rating:
  • We arrived in Mingora late afternoon. we will have two nights here. Tomorrow we will go to the Swat Valley. This is the scene from our hotel room. At night it is all lit up like a christmas tree, so pretty.
Mingora is mainly a market town, and long-distace transport hub, and it's noisy, polluted and fast paced.

Decorated Trucks: The truck drivers are so proud...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The truck drivers are so proud of their decorated trucks, they do look spectacular. They often stopped to have their photo taken, sometimes I had to pretend to take yet another one, just so that they would know I thought theirs was extra good. There is even a decorated tractor coming up behind the trucks.

I enjoyed your photo of the decorated truck. I found these all over Pakistan- Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, etc. They are indeed colorful and often stand in contrast to some old, dully-painted building, etc. Glad you took the time to post this. Thanks.
