Golden lane (Zlata Ulicka) is another one symbol of Old Prague. The tiny street was famous as a place where alchemists lived trying to develop gold from the stones.
Frans Kafka lived there temporary in the house #22 during November 1916 till March 17.
I've read recently in Internet that since 2002 tourists should pay an entrance fee to have a look over Golden lane
Prazhsky Hrad (Castle) in Gratchany on the hill across the Vltava offers a great tour and a great view. There are churches, narrow streets and places of interest. St. Vitus Cathedral dominates over the whole complex so you will not miss it. It is so wonderful inside the church so it is worth seeing. Prazhsky Hrad looks fantastic at night with the lights lit so the picture seems unreal.
Charles Bridge is one or the symbols of Prague. There is a legend about the building the bridge, actually I heard two of them. Vltava River turned to be a difficult place to build up a bridge and every time when the bridge was nearly finished the water collapsed the construction. Once again when the flood smashed the bridge the devil came to a builder to offer a deal – devil would protect the bridge against the water but in return to his help he would get a soul of a creature who is the first to step on the bridge. So the builder thought what a deal and they agreed. Finally the bridge was completed and it looked marvelous. At the night that day devil came to get his interest and he was waiting at one side of the bridge. One story says that then the builder played a trick - he caught a cock and let it go across the bridge, so devil took cock’s soul and no man was hurt. Another story is more tragic. It says that by the time when the bridge has been finished the builder forgot about the bargain with the devil. That night his wife came to have a look at the bridge and she carried a baby with her. So the kid was playing near the bridge and when his Mum turned aside he run to the bridge so devil took his soul. The guide who told us those tales said that sometime tourists can hear a strange sound like someone sneezes, this is that little kid ghost wearing only a baby shirt and feeling cold sneezes.
There is a tower at the and of the bridge, for small fee you can walk upstairs and have a fantastic look over the bridge.
Prague seems to be crowded with tourists within all seasons. The most famous place is an Old Town Square with its Astronomical Clock demonstrating a mechanical spectacle every hour. The Square is full of small bars and restaurants and gift shops. The city hall tower gives an excellent panoramic view across the whole city center.
Directions: Old Town Square / Staromestka
