Our journey starts in Grünberg, in the section of Germany called the Wetterau (Weather Valley).
To get here from Frankfurt/M, take the A5 Autobahn heading towards Giessen, and take the exit for Grünberg (Highway B49).
The picture you see above is the Grünberg Marketplace in the town square. This marketplace was always a meeting place for the people who lived here. It was located directly on the old commerce road going through "short Hesse" from Frankfurt towards the middle of Germany. The marketplace here and the streets that adjoin it are practically a living museum for Hessian Half-timbered Architecture for the past 500 years. The oldest house that is still standing dates back to around 1500. You can recognize this because of the overhanging upper floor, and the semi-circle half-timbered patterns, which was typical for this era; examples are the house on Markt Strasse No. 6 (the ice cream parlor), the house on Alsfelder Strasse 1/3, the one on Marktgasse 6, and Rabegasse 2, 8, 12. When you walk along the alleys, you can see all kinds of examples from other periods in time.
