Translated the town's name means "Loud Stream", but you can stand next to it and still hear what the person next to you is saying. Lauterbach is a favourite place to visit for German tourists, because of its simple Northeast Hessian charm. There is hardly a more typically Northeast Hessian town than this one, which prides its regional German dialect, their regional traditional costumes and festivals, and their middle German half-timbered houses.
Lauterbach is the crossroads for 3 touring roads in Germany: the Half-Timbered Road, the Fairytale Road and the Allee (Tree-lined) Road. That's why this is a great place to stop, because you can sample a little culture from all three of these tour roads running through Germany.
TRY a new road in Germany! If you want to see some of the most interesting half-timbered houses in Germany, try the TRAVELOGE The Half-Timbered House Road for a DIFFERENT ROAD to travel in Germany.

Lauterbach is famous throughout Germany for one particular product - cheese - in particular Strolch Cheese! Strolch is the German word for rascal, so you can think of Lauterbach the home of the Little Rascal.
At any rate they produce one of Germany's leading brands for Camembert Cheese, which you will most likely receive with your breakfast in your hotel. Tastes very mild (doesn't stink like the French ones) and is firm and not gooey.

beautiful Vogelsbergskreis with only little towns
The Guldenen Esel looks terrific. I share your opinion that little towns may be more interesting than fashionable touristy places.
Really enjoyed reading about your conversations with the master carpenter - it's amazing that someone still knows the old ways of building those half-timbered houses!
I like your tips on this pretty place! Thanks for your interesting comments about my national anthem tip!
