We roasted in August

Before you read any further, I should tell you right off that I didn't enjoy my trip to Croatia that much, so this is not going to be a page that sings the praises of Croatia in the highest tones. I will tell you how I experience it, and that ticks off some natives that read this page - I apologize for your hurt feelings - and I shall not generalize to say that this applies for the whole country.
To start things off on a more positive note - Croatia is a beautiful country. Remeniscent of Italy or Southern France with a more rugged coastline. The sky is as blue as this original picture, and the water is as well. The coast is pretty clean, and most of the coastal buildings, monuments and roads are well kept. The ferries are inexpensive and efficient. The national parks are wonderous.
On the other hand, the people who deal with tourists are either a) absolutely indifferent or b) rude. Sorry if you Croatians are grinding your teeth in front of your computer screen, but I experienced this in Cres, Mali Losinj, Veli Losinj, Pula, Susak, Unije, Silba and Zadar. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Contempt for Tourists - Concern for People

My first insight that maybe something may lie behind this blasé indifference to tourists came when my husband suffered a diabetes shock. It so hot that my husband lost his appetite, and consequently suffered a diabetes shock. We were in a cafe-bar and asked the waitress, who came to our table after 20 minutes (there were 5 people in the place) for 2 glasses of water, the bill, and to please call a taxi. She curtly informed us that this was not a taxi call-in center, and she would not make calls for guests (whether or not they paid). I told her that my husband was sick and would have to go to the hospital. She waved to where a bus stop was. I said that if we waited that long for a bus, my husband might die, right here in her cafe-bar. She looked skeptical. I explained that he was suffering from a sugar-shock. After a moment, she went to talk to one of the guests and he came by and told us that he would drive us to the hospital. He not only did that, he urged the doctors to treat my husband immediately. I am sure to this day that without his help, I would be a widow. That's how I found out that although they may be indifferent to tourists, they will really help you if you need serious help.

A helluva way to get introduced to a country! You need to get together with KristaB and sail the seas together in cooler weather, though it can seem the whole world is out there in the Adriatic at times in August.
