A Giant Leatherback - Kampong Rantau Abang

I travelled on the over night bus from Penang in the hope of seeing a giant leatherback turtle laying it's eggs. I was on a tight schedule and on my way down to Singapore. Feeling tired after a long nights bus journey I walked along the beach and found some bungalows. In the reastaurant I met a couple that I had been with in India, so we talked and they advised me that they had been here for five days and had no sign of a turtle and they now had to leave. Luckily for me I was woken at about 4:00am and told to get ready for the drive as a turtle had been spotted further down the beach.

I came here to watch the Giant Leatherback turtle lay it's eggs and I wasn't disappointed! We were not allowed to take... more travel advice

Cheap but comfortable Hotels (1)

Basic, but good enough for a couple of nights and comes with a wake up call when turtles are spotted. more travel advice

Rantau Abang will always bring good memories because it was the first place that I 'travelled' in my own country, with a Danish friend. :) Regards.

Witnessing a leatherback lay eggs is certainly an experience. Lovely page.
