Santa Cruz del Quiché is the capital of the Department of Quiché. It is situated at an altitud of 2,021 meters. It's about 19 kilometers north of Chichicastenango and about 164 kilometers from Guatemala city. It was funded in 1524. It's cathedral was built in the 17th century. It's most important holiday is celebrated from August 16th to 19th in honor of Saint Elena, where one can appreciate the Dance of the Snake ("El Baile de la Culebra") for what they use a snake known as "mazacuata". The "convites", groups of dancers wearing masks that go around the streets dancing, make their appearance during those dates also.
