Trinity Alps Wilderness, California

If you're looking for wildlife encounters --- can't think of a better place anywhere in California than the Trinity Alps Wilderness.

Doe by wilderness lake
This remote lake is one of my
favorites -- over the years have
had many wonderful wildlife
encounters here.

Climbing Suicide Ridge
From my camp along Stuart Fork
(near Portuguese Camp) -- I
dayhiked up the Sawtooth
Ridge/Caribou Trail --- or as it's
sometimes referred to --
"Suicide Ridge" ... a relentless
climb with little or no shade or
water but with excellent views
of Emerald Lake, Sapphire Lake
and from the ridgetop ---
Caribou Lake.

A young person died on this
ridge in 1982 --- probably from
heat prostration. So carry
water.

Pros:"California's second largest wilderness, over 100 named lakes, waterfalls galore, mountain meadows, rich in wildlife, glaciated peaks that can equal the Sierra Nevada, not in size but in beauty, many chances for solitude."
Cons:"Daytime temperatures can get very warm in the summer, though once the sun goes down, generally cools off very quickly. Some of the popular lakes -- like the Canyon Creek Lakes -- are often crowded during the summer."
In A Nutshell:"From the elusive golden trout to the rare weeping spruce ... the Trinity Alps is wilderness at its best."
