Nuevitas is as old as the Camagüey history. It was here where Camagüey, then "Puerto Principe", was originally founded. Constant pirate attacks, mosquitos and lack of drinking water were enough reasons to move the "villa" to the inland, to the center of the island; and the best place was exactly between two rivers: Tínima and Jatibonico.
Before 1959 Nuevitas was only a small town, where charcoal production, fish industry and a seaport gave employment to the lucky ones. After the 1959 triumph of the Revolution the town experienced a radical change, not only free education and health care, but the creation of a cement factory, a power plant, a fertilizer factory and other smaller factories and work places which changed the lives of thousands of people living here and other towns, farming areas and even from other provinces like Santiago de Cuba.
Of course the place has experienced new changes like the rest of the country after the collapse of socialism in Eastern Europe. But the essential services and needs of the people are still covered despite of the american embargo and the propaganda, that tries to weaken and srtangle the country.
Here, on the other side of the Bay of Nuevitas, is Santa Lucia, a tourist area, also another important source of employment since the early 80's.
From Santa Lucia you can fly to Santiago, Havana, Cayo Coco, Holguín or Cayo Kaguama, a wonderful tiny island south of Cuba, an earthly paradise where time seems to pass by with the blink of an eye. Snorkelling, diving and boat-trips are some of the options on the island. Nobody lives there, but the lots of iguanas, pelicans, the wild life and the tranquility of the place. Cayo Sabinal, another island north of Nuevitas, about half an hour boat trip from Santa Lucia, is full of wild white sand beaches; another place to relax and live a dream.
