I used to live in Malawi. I lived in the capital, Lilongwe for 3 years, until I was 9 (so a fair while ago). I can still remember it really well though, and if I can save up enough, after my coming trip to Canada, I WILL go back. Go to Monkey Bay in Lake Malawi. PS Most of the worlds 'fish tank fish' come from Lake Malawi, which takes up a third of the country, and is incredible if you don't mind the pot-holes in the roads you've got to take to get there. It is yet another good experience if you can laugh at ridiculous situations!!
Malawi is another good example of a place where almost everybody is very willing to help you. Some parts are very poor though, and there are a lot of people who can't really afford to feed their families etc. The thing is there is also a lot of people who try to get money and food by looking poor, just for the purpose of buying some household 'luxury' (some things that we take for granted, in a lot of places out there is very hard to come by). We gave food and money to some really poor looking people, and the village headman came up to us after and said "Why did you give to them? They are some of the richest in the village". It is hard to know.
But the country and people are excellent in general, and it is a shame that it is beginning to get large developments springing up all over the place. Go before the hordes do!!
