Barnard Castle is a beautiful small market town situated on the banks of the River Tees, in County Durham, the north east of England.

The Market Cross was built in 1747 by Thomas Breaks,a local landowner who's family manufactured woolens.Town council meetings and courts were held in the upper room and the lower room was used as the local jail.On market days farm produce was sold between the pillars.

The Castle.

Barnard Castle takes it's name from the castle founded in 1112 by Bernard, the son of Guy de Baliol.A Norman knight who fought alongside William the Conqueror at the battle of Hastings.
