Whitby is a very popular seaside town on the north-east coast. One of the finest buildings in Whitby is St.Mary`s Church which stands at the top of the 199 steps.This postcard shows the harbour from the top of the steps.

|  | The ruins of the abbey ,founded in 657 by St.Hilda , can be seen overlooking the town on the east cliff.Whitby has always had a strong sea-going tradition & was once the home of Captain Cook.The river Esk divides the old part of the town from the more recent West Cliff area.

For hundreds of years local craftsman have been making ornaments & jewelry from the local jet , a hard shiny form of coal.
