But in 1744 a fire came and the reconstructing church was destroyed. Reconstruction works began under Joseph Schmutzer, he was also responsible for church buildings in Wessobrunn and Rottenbuch. He finished the works of Zucalli and in 1762 the altars were introduced.

The church itself was completed in 1790, only the towers were completed. In the 19th century the building was more and more extended. After the second world war the whole monastery was renewed and restored. All the works were finished in 1976.

Things To Do: The giant dome
|
Tip Rating: |
 |
|
|
|
|
|
After entering the church have a look above. The church has a giant dome, and the whole church is under it. So everyone's eyes will get to the dome first and then to other details in the church.
It is richly decorated and they were made from two Tyrolians: Johann Jakob Zeller (1708-1783, he came from Reutte, and Martin Knoller (1725-1804).
It looks simply great and lots of windows let much light into the church. So it is possible to take pictures in an easy way, even with just a 100 ASA-film.

This is a view to the dome again and and you can see the richly decoration of the church again. Unfortuneatly the picture looks rather dark, so it would be a good idea to click on it .....
When I visited the Ettal monastery church, the service was already over and so I had luck and good take pictures from inside too.

Things To Do: The altars and the pulpit

Here you can see some of the altars: The pictures were made by Franz Georg Hofmann, who was a painter from Kempten, and the two brothers Thomas and Felix Anton Scheffler. The sculptures go back to Roman Anton Boos and Johann Baptist Straub, both were from Munich.
Between the altars you can see the pulpit, which is a masterpiece of Straub. It looks so beautiful and sweet, because it is rather small.

If look at the other side of the church, you will see this. It is worth to go there and watch the altars from a closer location. It is just amazing to see how many altars the church has. And it is also more than amazing that a little village like Ettal has such a great monastery church.

Things To Do: The main altar
|
Tip Rating: |

The main altar is in a separate room behind the main room and so it looks a little bit hidden. But it is worth to watch it too. Unfortuneatly my church guide has no special infos about the main altar.
However, it looks great too, like the whole church.

Things To Do: View to the main altar room

Here I tried to photograph the main altar again, but you don't see it on the picture, because it is in the room behind. On the left and right side you can see two of the many side altars again and the wooden thing in the forefront of the picture are the benches, where the people sit and pray.

Things To Do: The church interiors again

This pictures gives a good impression how big the church and the dome is. Here you can see the main altar, some of the side altars and the pulpit again.
If you ask me about the architectural style of the church I would say that it is a mixture of baroque, rococo and classicism. It was also built in these eras.
