Bangkok's (wealthy) family playground. This is where the well to do go who don't want Pattaya's excess on the weekends.
As you approach Hua Hin from Cha-am, you will see a number of high rise condos along the ocean that appear to pop out of the sand dunes. They are highly under-used condos (a couple might be hotels) where people bought condos during the boom years as an investment but never really use. Hua Hin and the beach south to Khao Takiap (Chopstick Hill), about 5 km south of HH, is dotted with high rise hotels and condos now. This is prime beach property and the great escape for the Bangkok set.
The beach between the HH and Khao Takiap is a nice stroll. The sand is fine if not exactly white. The water is usually not very clear except in the hot season when it hasn't rained in a while.
I was there for 2 months in 94 and have been there often since, and there are often a lot of jellyfish washed up on the shore - something to keep in mind if you are allergic. Also, we sometimes found hospital waste washed up on shore and that was none too comforting.
Besides the sea that not too many of the Bkk set actually step into while visiting (they are mostly there to sit in a lawn chair at the hotel or stroll the town), the big attraction is the night market in HH town (see night life). And the sea food.
