Ryoko and her parents took us on a 45 minute drive southwest of Saga to the great seaport city of Nagasaki on the East China Sea. The city is laid out for a few miles at sea level before rising halfway up the mountainside. The highway in the city meandered around the harbor where we saw Japanese naval vessels and the American Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) compound of Sasebo. Asking the father how Nihonjin felt about this naval base, I was informed that most Nihonjin realize the importance to their country of the base and want it there. Almost touching the raised roadway, a large freighter was completely out of water in drydock--what a sight. |
