For some of May, all June, and some July of 2001, I had the pleasure of living and working in Romania's beautiful Hunedoara region. I went with 30 other University students hoping to get a little archaeological experience abroad. We dug at Castelul Corvinestilor in the city of Hunedoara. Notwithstanding that Hunedoara is the smelliest, dirtiest city in the country besides Bucharest and Constanta, I had a fantastic time. Hunedoara is very close to the train station servicing all 3 train types in Romania (Rapid, Express, Local), and a bus/car ride from some of the most beautiful medieval churches, botanical gardens and restored Roman sites in Eastern Europe.
While there, we travelled to a number of cities around Transylvania that were doable within a weekend. Sibiu, Sighisoara, Brasov, Bran, Risnov, Cincis, Deva... The best part about the whole experience was the lack of tourists milling about the country except in expected areas like Bran Castle and Dracula's House in Sichisoara. It was neat to see other Westerners at first, but eventually we melted into the routine of chilling with the locals only and ignoring tourists. Friends were made that will never be lost, and the memory lasts even longer.
Since I was mostly in Transylvania during my stay, this page consists of mostly Transylvanian gems, especially those in the Hunedoara region.
