I spent 2 months working and living in Aqaba... The city itself is boring and ugly. However, I would be extremely upset if I didn't see it again. It's a fantastic place to live in. Safer than any city I've been in. Except Oakville. The proprieters of stores are more willing to shoot the *** than sell you stuff. The bookstore-guy would haul us off the street to translate letters to his Italian supplier. We would go out in the heat to yell at the other bookstore (which sells anti-everything books... politically extreme) for not having recieved US Vogue yet (we paid dearly for it, we had the right to yell). I helped my friend in his store while there was a rush of Hungarian tourists. It was neat selling coral and jewels as if I knew what was going on. Aqaba was my home and the people of Aqaba my family. Especially the Hillawi family. They were very good to me-- better than I deserved. |
