Ramada New Yorker: Didn't stay here but visited..

My mom stayed at the Ramada New Yorker July 2002. She was able to stay here for free since her nephew put her here on her business account so she didn't complain. It's location is great, 8th Avenue between 34th & 35th Street but the hotel was skanky. Her room was microscopic, the bathtub was filthy and the hallways were dark and dingy. The lobby looks nice so I guess the hotel fools people but I wouldn't recommend this place since there are so many other nice places to stay in NYC. My mom got the room for free for 5 days which did help her get over the overall disappointment of the hotel :-)
Unique Qualities: Nice lobby, good location. That's the only 2 positive qualities.

I had an early doctor's appointment (7:30AM) on 5/12/03 so me and my husband decided to stay overnight rather than deal with rush hour traffic. We only live 1/2 hour away but this appointment was so important, we decided to be stress-free. I did an internet hotel search for any hotel near 57th/58th & Broadway. Only 2 hotels were under $200/night, the rest were extremely expensive. I booked the Westpark through www.hotels.com for an amazing $89.00/night. I expected a complete fleabag for that price but was pleasantly surprised. It was much nicer than expected.
Unique Qualities: The room was small (had to walk sideways to get to the other side of the bed) but the bathroom was clean and had Bath & Bodyworks toiletries and the sheets were clean. It's a perfect place to stay if you want to be near Central Park (one block north) or Times Square (16 blocks south). The subway station is across the street (1,3,9 etc) and there is a parking garage next door that if you enter between 5am-10am, it only costs $11.00 with tax. I left the hotel at 7:20 for a 7:30 appointment and we were still early. If booking, check www.hotels.com rather than www.westparkhotel.com since hotels.com gave a better rate than the hotel.

I needed a large suite following surgery since I'd be spending 3 days in the room and I booked this hotel's suite at a somewhat pricey but not for Manhattan cost of $179.00 a night. The suite was larger than our apartment in New Jersey. The best thing about this hotel for me was that they allow pets so we brought Feline (pronounced Fellini) with us and she spent her 3 days in NYC staring at Central Park. The location is perfect, directly across from Central Park and 1 block north of Columbus Circle where many subway lines verge including the D,F,1, 3 and 9.
Unique Qualities: Some rooms are recently renovated and some aren't. Do ask for one that is, we did and I'm glad because even with being recently renovated, the furniture was a bit tatty. I brought some sheets along with me that we covered the sofa with and the top of the bed covering that me and my husband like to refer as a "sKanket", an abbreviation for skanky blanket. The king-sized bed was comfy and there were 2 enormous closets and a small kitchen pantry with a refrigerator and sink. Too bad the hotel didn't go the extra mile and provide a microwave, toaster and/or coffee-maker but there are many places in the area that deliver. I didn't try the restaurant in the hotel called The Conservatory but I read horrible reviews about it. The hotel offers free coffee in the lobby between 6am-7am, why that early, I couldn't tell you. Instead, walk over to Broadway and 62nd and get a fresh brewed coffee and a bagel from any one of the many delis.

Maurizioago Wed Mar 21, 2007 17:56 UTC Nice page. Ciao! | MariposaMaestra Fri Jul 7, 2006 19:11 UTC Just have to say that it's actually above Washington Heights which actually a beautiful neighborhood but you have to go through Harlem to get there which may not be as attractive to some visitors. | ForestqueenNYC Thu Mar 17, 2005 16:06 UTC Many excellent tips, but the best one was the Bathroom Diaries website. Oh, also, will have to check out the haircutteries in Chinatown. Complementi on the twins. | madamx Tue Jan 25, 2005 23:16 UTC Sue, one of the best New York pages on VT! I added several tips to my custom guide. Thanks for a great read ~ Helen |
