Restaurant Name: Red Bamboo
This is a new, wonderful vegetarian/vegan restaurant owned by the same owners of VP2 which is 2 stores down. The food is phenomenal and the atmosphere is serene. Great prices as well, especially their weekend lunch menu offerings at $6.95.
Favorite Dish: Butterfly pork chops. Yes, they're vegetarian and since I never had real dead-animal pork chops, I can't make a comparison but the meal was delicious. Do not miss the desserts, all the cakes are vegan (same baker as desserts from Veg-City Diners) but even if you don't care about eating vegan, the cakes are phenomenal.

Restaurant Name: Vegetarian Dim-Sum House
All vegetarian/vegan dim sum restaurant. Extremely cheap-you can stuff yourself for under $5. Just check off what you want on the dimsum page and give to waiter/waitress. Also has full menu. They provide you with unlimited cups of tea. The menu lists items such as shrimp and roast pork but everything is vegan, made with taro, wheat gluten, tofu etc. Only problems are waitstaff does not speak English and bathrooms are dirty.
Favorite Dish: Mashed taro boxes Corn congee Lotus leaves Spring rolls Shrimp buns

Restaurant Name: Mamoun's Falafel
Very small place, very very small. A few tables and a counter that you walk up to and order and wait for your food. If you sit and eat there, someone's bum will be in your face. Cheap, a falafel costs $2.75 and is extremely filling.
Favorite Dish: Duh, falafel! With baba ganoush. For those unitiated folks, a falafel is a sandwich made in a pita bread. Falafel actually refer to the fried balls made with ground chickpeas. The sandwich comes stuffed with falafel, salad, and tahini sauce (ground sesame seeds). Baba ganoush is a spread/sauce/dip made with roasted eggplant, garlic, lemon juice and olive oil.

Restaurant Name: Sacred Chow
Great little place on Hudson Street that offers delicious vegan baked goods and entrees for affordable prices. Few tables to eat here or takeaway. Update: They moved to 227 Sullivan Street and now are a full-service restaurant. Very cute though small. Haven't eaten here yet, just went inside to pick up a menu.
Favorite Dish: The buttermilk biscuits are fabulous though all their baked goods are worthy of even the most critical palette. Loads of healthy and delicious foods that no animal suffered for.

Restaurant Name: Pommes Frites
All they sell are fries/frites/chips so what do you think the unique qualities are? They do offer a huge selection of dipping sauces but I prefer the frites plain or with malt vinegar.
Favorite Dish: French fries-Belgian Fries-Chips Whatever you want to call them, they are ggrreatt!

Restaurant Name: Galaxy Global Eatery
Funky, blue restaurant that promotes the use of Hemp in food products. Eclectic menu. The food was very good but the menu was completely annoying, everything has cutsey names and it's a challenge to figure out what exactly is what. But like I said, the food makes it worthwhile. If you're into spotting beautiful people, this is a good place to check out.
Favorite Dish: Veggie Burger with french fries (excellent fries). Salads Yucca (love this stuff)

Restaurant Name: Tea & Sympathy
Menu is all British so any Brit or follower can get their fill of Welsh rarebit, beans on toast, shepard's pie etc. They do a full Sunday roast beef w/ yorkshire pudding though I've never tried, not into dead roasted flesh. Next door is their shop that sells sweets, groceries, videos and anything else you might need from the UK. Down the street is A Salt & Battery, their fish & chip shop.
Favorite Dish: Afternoon tea-$15 will get you pots of tea, sandwiches and pastries. Sticky toffee pudding is great.

Maurizioago Wed Mar 21, 2007 17:56 UTC Nice page. Ciao! | MariposaMaestra Fri Jul 7, 2006 19:11 UTC Just have to say that it's actually above Washington Heights which actually a beautiful neighborhood but you have to go through Harlem to get there which may not be as attractive to some visitors. | ForestqueenNYC Thu Mar 17, 2005 16:06 UTC Many excellent tips, but the best one was the Bathroom Diaries website. Oh, also, will have to check out the haircutteries in Chinatown. Complementi on the twins. | madamx Tue Jan 25, 2005 23:16 UTC Sue, one of the best New York pages on VT! I added several tips to my custom guide. Thanks for a great read ~ Helen |
