Da Bronx

by feline01 - last update: Sep 4, 2003

My first trip to the Bronx, at least from what I can remember, was in 1996 when I first met my husband-to-be. Born and raised in the Bronx, he has a love-hate relationship with the borough. His 90-year old grandparents still live independently on East 207th Street. The Bronx is colorful, vibrant, slightly crazy and has some terrific neighborhoods. It also has graffiti, garbage, horrible drivers, urban plight and noise. In other words, it is a typical city. It would be a great place to visit as long as you're the "right" kind of traveller. No large cameras hanging around your neck, don't walk down the street carrying a map in front of you and don't wear your haute couture when walking down the Grand Concourse. If you speak some Spanish, you're in luck. Many people in the Bronx are bilingual or monolingual, speaking Spanish only.

This photo was taken from my husband's grandparents' apartment. You can see the Manhattan skyline in the distance.

Fordahm Rd. hasn't been Irish in 25 years. Most of the Irish have moved out of the Bronx except Woodlawn, Kingsbridge, and a tiny section of Bedford Park/Norwood.
