Wow!

by feline01 - last update: Sep 4, 2003

St. Petersburg, or Leningrad as it was known when I visited is an amazing place. It was the first place I visited when entering the U.S.S.R. (as it was still known as in 1989) and as I entered from Finland and saw the skyline for the first time, I was humbled. Here was a place that I had only read about. I never truly believed that I would visit one day. My grandmother was born in Russia and maybe a little part of my DNA recognized my heritage. I loved the architecture and the placement of the city on the water but the buildings were so run down and the citizens just didn't seem to have enough of anything. I certainly felt like a rich capitalist and I was camping! I hope it's gotten better for the locals.

The USSR in 1989 was really very adventurous trip. You need to come to S.-P. today to compare it with Leningrad ;-)

Nice to see, You have seen it at communiste times only - like me ! Shops have a big variety of goods now, much higher prices and no queues, as I have seen in Moscow. For the elder generation life is hard with small pensions and the high prices !

I love St.Petersburg. Times have changed a little and shops aren't empty anymore. Also no booties in the Hermitage... what a pity ;-)
