I chose my trip carefully, and included Tokyo, Himeji, Kurashiki, Okayama, Shiminoseki, Hagi, Matsue, Yasugi, Kyoto and Narita. Yasugi is a one horse town with nothing of note except for the most fabulous art museum with the most incredible gardens I've ever seen, well worth the effort to get there from Matsue (which was no effort at all, really). I'm a great lover of Japanese gardens and my personal favourites include Koishikawa in Tokyo and the little garden at the back of the Ohara art museum in Kurashiki. The Adachi Art Museum and Gardens of Yasugi is better than all the other gardens put together. Japan was extremely easy to get around and as a single woman travelling alone, I found it safe as well. My only disappointment was in not finding enough samurai, even at the Eiga Mura Movieland Park near Kyoto! I did manage to find plenty of Astro Boy and there is a shop in the Kyoto station that sells loads of goodies. |
