Leadville is the highest incorporated town in the United States at 10,152 feet.
In its heyday during the late 19th century it was home to thousands of gold and silver miners and, of course, the saloons and brothels that went with the mining industry.
It has loads of character and you still get a sense of the Old West walking around.
The Leadville 100 mile trail run is held each year and is billed as the toughest race in the US. Runners have 30 hours to complete 100 miles at altitudes between 10,200 and 12,600 feet! (I think I'll stick to 4-wheel drive).
