Passau, a small town in Bavaria near the Austrian border, is famous for being on the confluence of 3 rivers - the Donau (Danube), Inn and the Ilz.
It is also home to St Stephans Cathedral which houses the largest church organ in the world. The local population is quite small (around 50,000) but there is a large student community and lots of tourists. The tourists, from abroad and other parts of Germany, tend to be quite old. Water dominates. Several cruises of varying durations are available and flooding is an annual event. The flood in August 2002 was the worst since 1954.
- Pros:An incredibly pretty fairytale-like town in Bavaria
- Cons:Not the most exciting place for young people
- In a nutshell:A beautiful town where 3 rivers meet

I liked Passau very much, it's still fresh in my memory!
I suppose the plaza is called that because when it floods the locals say - Oh rathaus! The plaza is flooded again!
Bavaria is definitely my favorite part of Germany, love the blend of German and Italian influences...
Wow 3 Euros to see the World's Largest Organ! Sounds like a bargain to me and I'm a cheapie!!
You are right about the dialect, it is hard to understand for foreigners and the rest of Germany - but not for Austrians ... :-)) our dialect is very similar... and Hacklberger beer is great!
hahahaha.I had the problem in Australia....and yes, passau is realy worth a trip, lovely page Phil.great tips and pics
Do they have spoons in Passau? Oh wait...wrong page! ;-p
