Getting TO/AROUND: The forward thinking councillors of Vienna introduced this great new scheme recently. Around the city are small bike stands where you can obtain a bike by inserting a 2 Euro coin. When (if) you return the bike to any stand you get your money back. Apparently about 800 bikes were stolen in the first week of the scheme! Isn't it typical that a great scheme like this gets abused?

Getting TO/AROUND: If you are in Vienna for the day it is probably worth your while buying a 24-hour Wien Karte for 5 Euros. This allows you to travel on buses, trams and the U-Bahn. It is far more convenient than buying tickets for each separate journey. Once you have bought your ticket remember to validate it before commencing your first journey using one of the validating machines located in stations and on buses/trams.

As a person from Vancouver working and visiting Vienna, I was the *** non smoker guy. Big turn off! Must be a lot of respiritory related deaths there. | eefcee Sat May 5, 2007 08:51 UTC
This seems to have changed dramatically in the past few years. In 2005 the only true non-smoking I found in Vienna was Starbucks. Now, 2007, I find Vienna full of no smoking zones. The U-Bahn platforms are transformed, very little smoke there now. | travelthrough Fri Sep 1, 2006 15:22 UTC
and it is never going to change either, the smoking policy in Vienna. Cos it always takes them 10 years to realize the problem and 5 additional years to cope with it.... |
