Fondest Memory: The Vienna social season revolves around various balls. I attended my first (and only) one on 28 February 2003 - the Flüchtlings Ball. This was held at the Vienna Rathaus, a huge building, and was quite informal. The thousands of people attending were dressed in everything from jeans to ball gowns. Opernball, probably the most famous of the balls attended by Vienna's high society, had been held the previous day. There was lots on TV and in the papers about the presence of ex-Baywatch star Pamela Anderson. She had been invited as the guest of Dickie Lugner, an Austrian playboy who made his fortune through construction. Fondest Memory: Vienna has some attractive little streets and alleyways with specialist shops.

Fondest Memory: Street lights are strung on wires in Vienna as opposed to being mounted on posts. I really like the way the wires have created a star here with the Rathaus in the background.

Fondest Memory: Watching the Viennese skating in front of the Rathaus while drinking Glühwein. The kids even have a small rink to themselves. Good thing - from what I witnessed on the main rink with people crashing into the hoardings and each other, it looks like a dangerous sport!

Fondest Memory: Because of the destruction in WW2 there is not much left of Medieval Vienna. Here is one of the remaining examples.

As a person from Vancouver working and visiting Vienna, I was the *** non smoker guy. Big turn off! Must be a lot of respiritory related deaths there. | eefcee Sat May 5, 2007 08:51 UTC
This seems to have changed dramatically in the past few years. In 2005 the only true non-smoking I found in Vienna was Starbucks. Now, 2007, I find Vienna full of no smoking zones. The U-Bahn platforms are transformed, very little smoke there now. | travelthrough Fri Sep 1, 2006 15:22 UTC
and it is never going to change either, the smoking policy in Vienna. Cos it always takes them 10 years to realize the problem and 5 additional years to cope with it.... |
