Off The Beaten Path: Dental treatment
  • Tip Rating:
  • I wasn't sure where to include this as there isn't an obvious category.
If you have need for a dentist while in Singapore I can recommend Dr. Gareth Pearson, a UK expat. He is a very nice guy who keeps up to date with the latest techniques, has a good way with patients and isn't too expensive.

  • Singapore, along with the rest of the Malaysian Peninsular, was occupied by the Japanese for three and a half years. The Japanese Imperial Army landed in Malaysia and southern Thailand making their way down to Singapore. The occupation took the Allied forces by complete surprise and was quite brutal. Chinese Singaporeans were treated particularly badly, some being tortured and others executed. As an example to others the Japanese decapitated Singaporeans leaving their heads displayed in prominent places around the island. A note would be attached to the effect that this person had disobeyed the authority of the Japanese Imperial Army and had been suitably punished. Anyone thinking of disobeying them would be treated similarly. This kind of behaviour must have been quite a deterrent.

The British who were governing Singapore at the time were made prisoners of war along with soldiers from other Allied countries, notably ANZACs. Some were forced to work on the famous Death railway.

The museum charts this period of Singapore's history with photographs, artefacts and quotes. It is not very large but is touching. There is also some artwork, quilts made by women POWs and a shop that has a number of books for sale about the subject. It will not interest everyone but if you are interested in the history of the region or perhaps have a relative that was in Singapore during this time it is worth a visit.

To get there take the MRT to Tanah Merah station and then take a number 2 bus which stops right outside.

Off The Beaten Path: Sensual Massage
  • Tip Rating:
  • Around Chinatown, and indeed elsewhere in Singapore, are a number of health centres and massage places. Quality and prices are variable, the lowest rate being about 35 SGD for an hour. At the top of the scale is Sensual Massage at 62A Temple Street. The receptionist told me that this is the only sensual massage place on the island but didn't go into great detail about what a sensual massage consists of, compared to a regular massage. I would like to have found out but the price was a bit steep. Maybe if I'd been going back to the UK I would have treated myself but as I only had a few days to go before returning to Thailand, where I can get an extremely sensual massage for about 30 SGD, I gave it a miss. If anyone goes I'd be interested to hear what it was like. The masseuses look quite delicious. Treatments start at around 65 SGD for something basic and go up to around 200 SGD for the works. Their phone number is +65 6227 5488 (hand phone +65 9244 6516).

I can understand wanting to put up interesting information about your trip, but it shouldn't be in the tip section unless it is potentially useful to other travelers. Instead, put it on your introduction page, travelogue, etc.
