My first visit to Ko Samui was in 1987. At the time it was just a place for backpackers and fairly quiet. My brother went a couple of years later and from his account it still sounded like a quiet place. I have just been there for the 2nd time in December 2002 and it has changed beyond recognition. Gone is the peace and tranquility - from the main beaches at least but I am sure there are still quiet spots on the island. There are McDonalds, KFC's, Mr Donuts, and of course, 'Irish' pubs.
Chaweng suffers from the incessant beat of dance music and the friendliness of a lot of locals has disappeared. I guess it was inevitable. |
