  • Fondest Memory: The younger generation in Thailand may have lost touch a little with their religion but it is very important to the older people.
While at the Grand Palace I watched this old woman enter the grounds and walk with great difficulty, using a stick which she clung on to with gnarled hands, to get to the Temple of the Emerald Buddha so that she could pray.

  • Fondest Memory: The Chinatown area of Bangkok is a fascinating place to wander around. Old traditions have been kept alive and I enjoyed going into Chinese medicine shops to watch traditional medicines being prepared.

    General Tips: Selling gems
  • Tip Rating:

  • Fondest Memory: Gem scams are notorious in Bangkok. These girls looked fairly respectable but it would take even more than a pretty face to get me into a gem shop!

    Eating: Corn on the cob

  • Fondest Memory: The variety of food sold on the street. This man is selling freshly cooked corn on the cob.

  • Favorite Thing: The Asians like to adopt western holidays and celebrations to add to their own. Well, why not?! Even though they don't really seem to grasp the significance of Christmas they like wearing Santa hats, and street buskers play Jingle Bells - they continue playing well into January I might add!
Valentines Day is another such example. I was in Bangkok for February 14 and the flower vendors were doing a roaring trade selling red roses.

  • Fondest Memory: Life on the streets of Bangkok. I thought this scene was so typical. Street vendors trying to make a living and hordes of people going about their daily business. I have never seen as many people as I have in Bangkok - it is a seething mass of humanity!

  • Fondest Memory: In a lot of places I've visited life takes place behind closed doors. As a visitor you can feel excluded from everything.
Not so in Bangkok. People just live on the street and everything happens there. The streets are always bustling and I just love walking around taking in all the sights. An example is these girls sitting on the pavement styling each others hair. The 'girl' in the background looks a bit dodgy!
Oh, how I miss Thailand ....
