Bangkok

Food vendor on the streets of Bangkok
It's hot. It's humid. It's sticky. It's noisy. It's polluted. It's full of seedy characters trying to con you out of money. It is the vice capital of the world. It is crazy. It shouldn't be allowed. I love it!!

Arriving in Bangkok always excites me but within about 3 hours on the streets I want to get out.

Everyone should experience Bangkok at least once in their lifetime.

Accommodation

For what it's worth, I would suggest spending a little more on accommodation in Bangkok than you would elsewhere in Thailand.

I have not stayed in the real budget places, the type that are common around Banglamphu, but have stayed at quite a few hotels around the 1000 baht per night mark. They are okay but can be noisy and aren't really that comfortable.
Much better to spend a few hundred baht more and stay in a place where you will be isolated from the chaos on the streets outside.

I recommend Asia Travel for booking accommodation. The prices they have negotiated with hotels is much better than you will be able to get direct. They are very efficient at answering emails and best of all do not require you to provide credit card details. This is a concern in Thailand where credit card fraud is rife.

Another resource you may find useful for arranging accommodation is VT member TravelAgent4Thailand (Winston).

Culture

Bangkok is full or wats, temples, museums and other cultural institutions.

Pros:"It's exciting with never a dull moment"
Cons:"Bangkok is a complete assault on all of your senses"
In A Nutshell:"Words can't describe - it needs to be experienced"
