While in Thailand in 1992, I took a daytrip to Phi Phi from Phuket. It was fairly quiet and very pleasant. The movie 'The Beach' was filmed there some years later. Because of this, and the way that tourism has taken off in Thailand in the 90's, things have changed.
The island (islands, in fact) are still undeniably beautiful but these days there is a constant stream of daytrippers arriving from Phuket and Krabi. It was inevitable but quite sad. I returned for another daytrip in 2003 to see what had changed since I was first there. My travelogue will give you an idea.
- Pros:Beautiful clear water and scenery
- Cons:Hordes of daytrippers
- In a nutshell:Still worth seeing - if you don't mind crowds

I remember that Beach movie, Phil. The scenery was fabulous. Your page is easily AS scenic as the movie, and it has a much better plot. : )

So Phi Phi Leh is not the same anymore? Glad I stopped by here, Phil. I was luring C to Phi Phi but if there are too many daytrippers, perhaps we should pass. Where do we find the perfect undiscovered beach that is far away from civilisation.......

loved reading about your thai adventures. stayed on phi phi don in 01 and phi phi ley has indeed been spoiled by the tourists with litter everywhere and untold speedboats moored there. Proposed to my girlfriend on phi phi don so will always be dear to me!
