I had been aware for a long time that Kuta was the place where young, budget travellers (Aussies in particular) went to drink and do whatever else they do.
If I had gone to Bali under normal circumstances I would probably have gone to Kuta out of interest to confirm my suspicions about the place.
It happened that my visit to Bali was not quite under normal circumstances as it was only a few months after the terrorist bombing in Kuta that killed 187 people. I went to Kuta nevertheless.
I found it to be a pleasant enough place but was aware that what I was seeing was not typical. It was very quiet and the locals were struggling to find work. People offering massages on the beach were desperate for work and some told me that they had not had a client all day.
In time, Kuta will return to normal and I hope it is soon for the sake of the people who live and work there.
