Maybe there's a scientific reason why it seems that experiences are more intense when a person is young. The neurotransmitters in your brain haven't fired as much, or maybe they've not been damaged by environmental toxins, or alcohol, or the normal wear 'n tear of everyday life. I don't know why: but the day that I spent in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in April 1985 remains very clear in my memory, with the sensations I picked up then as fresh in my mind now as the Alpine air atop the Zugspitze.

I like mountains

I was really fond of that gray overcoat in my early 20s; I can't remember what about it appealed to me. It wasn't particularly warm, and it had a peculiar sheen. I think it may have been my father's, and I saved it from the Goodwill bag. But I know that I was happy wearing it.
