Restaurant Name: Cafe Sabarsky
Cafe Sabarsky is a authentie Viennese cafe tucked into the Neue Galerie on the Upper East Side (Fifth Avenue at 86th). Great atmosphere: this is a lovely place to meet with an old friend to catch up on things! My friend Lucy spent some with me in Vienna a few years ago, and so for us this was a real time-warp. Yes, you can get a Wiener Melange here, and yes, the waitstaff will not rush you out of the place - just like the old world.
Favorite Dish: The Hungarian Goulash is the best I've had this side of the Alps! I've was too full to try any of the Sacher Torte, but I imagine it's quite good too.

Hungarian Pastry Shop: Uptown Budapest

Restaurant Name: Hungarian Pastry Shop
Danger Zone for Dieters! This uptown bakery serves the most delectable pastries this side of the Atlantic. I'm sure they serve thousands of mille feuilles every year, and their Napoleons would please a Bonaparte. Enormously popular with Columbia Students, the Hungarian Pastry Shop is a small, simple operation: order at the counter, find a seat at the back (if you can), and enjoy.

Caffe Reggio: Historic Greenwich Village Coffeeshop

Restaurant Name: Caffe Reggio
Caffe Reggio has been in business for almost 80 years, since 1927, and it's not to hard to imagine to place still being open in 2087. It's an old world place in New York, small, cozy, and conducive to close friends and lovers sharing intimacies, or just sitting and enjoying the time and the space. You might feel as if you've been transported to Roma or Milano, yet Washington Square is just three minutes away. Open early in the day and late at night, with a mix of patrons young and old, gay and straight, well-heeled and studenty.

Popular with Columbia Students. Burgers, fries, thick shakes that they serve with the metal container, macaroni and cheese, salads, etc. Good hangover food. Genuinely ersatz.

One question: Why the statue of a Hungarian leader? What does he have to do with NY? | Dabs Wed Jun 15, 2005 21:00 UTC "Shy" yooperprof? There are at least two disbelieving Chicagoans :-) I tried to stop by that Cafe and it was closed, looks like I missed a treat! | deecat Wed Jun 1, 2005 17:07 UTC Hey, Chet, nice page on New York City. Love the two tips on the Westin Hotel Architecture...what a riot...Miami look in NYC! Enjoyed write up on your hotel. Some mighty fine photography for "shy" (?) Yooperprof. |
