At one point, Silver Bay did ship out the mineral for which it is named, but for the last 100 years, its primary export has been iron from the nearby inland ranges.

"Taconite" is a particular grade of iron ore which dominates the Mesabi Range - and before it is sent out, it is transformed into round solid pellets which are relatively easy to transport.
